Summer Training Block:

Once June 1 hits in New Orleans, the gates of hell open.  Summertime is really challenging for a lot of us because of the heat. It can be tempting to stay inside where it’s cool and dry, but there are more pleasant moments in the day where you can spend a little time taking in some fresh air.

You just need to know when and where to go, and what to do!

There’s a pretty great explanation on urban heat islands here: https://www.reuters.com/graphics/CLIMATE-CHANGE/URBAN-HEAT/byvrejywdpe/

  1. Find a green space. In areas where there is a lot of concrete, you may feel like you’re in a brick oven because… you are. On a sunny summer day, the surface temperature of these areas can be up to 60 degrees hotter than the reported ambient temperature! degrees cooler than the ambient temperature.

  2. Find the wind! Nothing is worse than stagnant air. Wind can help with sweat evaporation keep you cool. Generally more open spaces have less surface friction that dissipates winds that occur low to the ground (the Great Plains are very windy for a reason). Also, long narrow strips of land can increase the velocity of surface winds because of the Venturi effect (https://www.simscale.com/blog/what-is-venturi-effect/) … as a parcel of relatively low velocity wind gets constricted… the air pressure in that area drops and wind gets stronger. You can also take advantage of convective wind effects near bodies of water that create the Sea Breeze.

  3. Find the Shade! Shaded areas can feel up to 20 cooler than unshaded areas. You can create your own shade by wearing a hat. Added bonus… did you know that you brain gets way hotter than your average body temperature(https://www.sciencealert.com/new-research-shows-your-brain-can-run-a-lot-hotter-than-we-ever-realized)? Protect it!

  4. Dress for the Weather! Kiss your sleeves and pants goodbye. Yes, leggings have not place outside… its basically like wearing a wetsuit. You’ve got to let the body breathe. Tight constrictive clothing has got to go. This also includes your shoes. If it is safe for you to take off your shoes in our outdoor workouts, or even wear a good paid of workout sandals (yes… they exist….see here: https://www.earthrunners.com/ ), by all means do so.

  5. Bring Reinforcements! Nothing is worse than walking around like a swampy puddle all day. Bring an extra set of clothes with you so if you happen to get extra sweaty, you can get a good reset.

  6. Change your Strategy…..

This summer we are going to change the tempo on our workouts… A LOT.

This is the perfect opportunity to slow down a little bit.

    No more barnburner conditioning exercises.

Instead we are going to focus on strength and high skill movements… where the reps per set are low and rest time between sets is much longer.

The heat will allow our joints to stay warm, but we aren’t going to be cranking the heart rate up for sustained periods of time.

This means… we are going to get Strong AF this summer and take our neuromuscular control to the next level.

We’re going to make it through this summer, and make the best of it.

See you Out There, Coach CJ
